POSITION OVERVIEW

 

The Chief Financial Officer holds a pivotal, strategic, and hands-on role within Sundance Institute, assuming responsibility for all financial aspects and fiduciary duties of the organization, a multi-state nonprofit with a $47 million operating budget. This position oversees two year-round employees and requires a candidate with a robust comprehension of nonprofit financials.

 

Reporting directly to the CEO, the Chief Financial Officer will lead the Finance team in supporting and executing business strategies, engaging in board-level initiatives, and demonstrating strong leadership, integrity, and financial acumen.

 

This full-time position entails extended hours and may work remotely within a state we currently operate in. Travel to festivals, labs, events, and other Institute offices will be required on occasion.

 

Top priorities include but are not limited to…

  • Drive strategic financial planning initiatives to ensure the organization’s long-term stability and health, utilizing data-driven insights and risk management strategies to navigate economic fluctuations and industry challenges.

  • Participate in the development of the Institute’s long and short-term strategic planning processes, translating strategy into a balanced financial plan, and overseeing financial metrics and benchmarking.

  • Translate organizational priorities into a multi-year budget, scenarios, and narratives, identifying resources and considerations using an equity lens.

  • Oversee budgeting, cash flow, and balance sheet management while collaborating with HR to establish staffing structures necessary to support Institute programs, maintaining a minimum of an 18-month rolling outlook. .

  • Participate in organizational strategic planning to ensure operational needs are comprehensively addressed.

  • Ensure effective communication with the leadership team,keeping them informed of issues related to expenses, revenue projections, and cash flow.

  • Direct a team of professionals, including selecting and training highly effective staff, providing direction, feedback, and support to ensure employees understand their responsibilities and perform effectively in their roles while also delegating appropriate and meaningful work.

  • Ensure organization-wide compliance with federal and state guidelines to maintain 501(c)(3) status, overseeing processes and procedures for a clean audit report and tax form 990.

  • Report the organization’s finances at Board Finance and Audit Committee meetings.

  • Participate in the Institute’s fiscal planning team to ensure accurate tracking of revenue and expenses, partnering with the Controller to plan and lead fiscal planning meetings.

  • Working with the CEO and COO to drive the organization to balanced annual budgets and fiscal health to ensure long-term sustainable growth of the organization.

  • Supporting the Advancement Department on capital campaigns, endowment campaigns, and planned giving.

  • Provide oversight and establish policies for all Institute investments, including endowment.

  • Direct accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.

  • Support and review negotiations and contract preparations for new business to ensure the organization’s financial growth in a sound manner, partnering with the Controller in administering insurance policies and programs.

  • Lead the 401(k) planning team to ensure fiduciary compliance, appropriate plan performance, and staff participation.

 

You have the following direct or transferable skill sets:

  • 10 years of progressively responsible financial leadership roles in a similar or adjacent industry.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or Business Administration or equivalent experience.

  • Strong knowledge of GAAP.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with an ability to present information effectively.

  • Ability to interact effectively and professionally with individuals at all levels of the organization.

  • Understanding of the strategic, financial, and organizational implications of actions within an evolving organization.

  • Exceptional team player and leader, capable of inspiring and motivating reports and colleagues to achieve results.

  • Ability to drive change by engaging others and gaining buy-in through influential means to accomplish goals.

  • Possesses presence, credibility, and stature to foster respect, trust and a positive organizational image.

  • CPA exam certification preferred.

  • Experience with NetSuite preferred.

  • Prior experience working for a 501(c)(3) status nonprofit preferred.

  • Legal authorization to work in the United States.

  • Financial Health and Stability Index: Develop a comprehensive index that measures the financial health and stability of the organization, including metrics such as operating surplus/deficit, cash flow adequacy, liquidity ratios, and debt-to-equity ratios.

  • Compliance and Audit Performance: Measure the organization's compliance with federal and state regulations, as well as adherence to accounting standards (GAAP). This KPI can include metrics such as the number of compliance issues resolved, audit findings, and the timeliness and accuracy of financial reporting.

  • Strategic Financial Planning Effectiveness: Contribute to the development and execution of strategic financial plans aligned with the organization’s goals.

  • Leadership and Team Development: Managing and developing the finance team through leadership, a strong financial team is essential for maintaining financial integrity and supporting organizational objectives.

  • Contribution to Growth Initiatives: Support growth initiatives such as capital campaigns, endowment campaigns, and planned giving programs aimed at expanding the organization’s impact and sustainability.

 

In addition to an annual salary of $200,000.00 to $230,000.00*, this position is eligible for our comprehensive benefits package, highlights include:

*Final rate of pay is determined based on the applicant's geographic location, relevant experience and skills, and internal equity among similar positions within our organization.
